Happy Hours
Beer, Cocktails, Wine, Food:(Note: This review is based on ONE happy hour visit.)
I was really hoping to like my HH experience at 23Hoyt, based on all the rave reviews I read/heard, but I was not really impressed at all. My cocktail (I forget the name) was supposed to contain gin, but all I could taste was sugar. The fried mussels were underseasoned, but otherwise had good texture. The bruschetta was stale and pretty tasteless. The wild mushroom croquettes were simply okay--tasty, but not as crispy as the "deep-fried" description suggested. However! My friend had the grilled chicken skewers and said they "melted in his mouth." Service was good. Lighting, not-so-much (too dark). 2.5/5. I'll round up to be nice.
What's amazing about this place is that the happy hour food ($1-$5) doesn't suck. You can easily make a meal out of a few plates totaling less than $10, and there's plenty to choose from for veggies and omnivores alike. There are usually two drink specials for $4-$6, and a decent wine at $5 for a good size pour. A great space for people watching on 23rd, the decor is minimalist and classy, but not stuffy.
